Stepping into a gym for the first time can feel like walking into an entirely different world. Machines with a million levers, weights clanging in the corner, and seasoned pros seeming to know every move. Intimidating, right? The good news: everyone started somewhere, and a little etiquette can help you fit right in and thrive in this exciting new environment.

Here’s a guide to gym etiquette to ensure your fitness journey kicks off with confidence:

1. Rerack Your Weights

If you use it, put it back. This isn’t just about being polite—it’s a safety measure too. Leaving weights on machines or scattered on the floor creates hazards for others. Rack those dumbbells and unload barbells when you’re done.

2. No Weight Slamming or Dropping

We get it; you’re lifting heavy, and you’re proud! But slamming or dropping weights can damage equipment and startle others around you. Control your weights, both during and at the end of your sets, unless you’re using equipment specifically designed for that purpose.

3. Respect Personal Space

Gyms can get crowded, but try to keep an arm’s length distance from others. No one enjoys having their workout interrupted by someone inching too close for comfort.

4. Dress the Part

Wear appropriate and comfortable workout gear. Breathable, moisture-wicking clothes and proper athletic shoes are key. Avoid overly revealing or inappropriate outfits—the focus should be on your workout, not causing distractions.

5. Share Equipment

During busy hours, you might need to work in sets with others. If someone’s using a machine or bench, politely ask if you can work in. Share fairly, and don’t monopolize popular machines.

6. Clean Up After Yourself

Sweat happens—and that’s a good thing! But leaving a sweaty machine or bench for the next person is a no-no. Always wipe down equipment after use. Most gyms provide cleaning supplies, so keep it fresh for the next member.

7. Follow the Rules

Every gym has unique rules. Whether it’s regarding gym hours, guest policies, or specific safety guidelines, familiarize yourself and stick to them. These exist to make the gym safe and welcoming for everyone.

8. Be Respectful and Kind

Say hello, smile, and acknowledge others. This fosters a supportive atmosphere. Celebrate your wins and theirs, and never make someone feel judged for how they work out.

A Final Tip: Enjoy the Journey

Fitness is about progress, not perfection. Show up, give your best effort, and respect your fellow gym-goers. When we’re all kind, considerate, and mindful, the gym becomes a thriving space for everyone to crush their goals.
