As we approach Juneteenth, we are thrilled to celebrate and honor this significant day with our vibrant and diverse community and you should too! Juneteenth, observed on June 19th, commemorates the emancipation of the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, in 1865, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. This day stands as a powerful reminder of the resilience, struggle, and triumph of Black Americans and is a crucial part of our shared history.
What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth, a blend of "June" and "nineteenth," marks a pivotal moment in American history. On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced General Order No. 3, proclaiming the freedom of all enslaved people in Texas. This announcement came more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, highlighting the slow and uneven process of emancipation across the United States.
Juneteenth is a day of celebration, reflection, and education. It honors the end of slavery in the United States and serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality and justice. Communities across the country celebrate Juneteenth with events such as parades, festivals, and educational activities, emphasizing the importance of freedom, unity, and progress.
